Who to Meet

g benjamin

Guy Benjamin

Interviewed April 1, 2008 at his home in Coral Bay

As many of you regular Sun Times readers will know, we generally keep this interview short and ask the same five questions. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Guy Benjamin, he is truly one of the gems of St. John: witty, thoughtful, eloquent and sparkling. How could we limit him to five measly questions?! Well, we couldn't. Here are some of the thoughts on Mr. Benjamin's mind....

Interview by Susan Connair

What are you doing today?
Today I am having an interview with you, and later seeing my friends, the Goldenthorns, from Pennsylvania.

What's one thing you know about St. John for sure?
We're in the throes of getting out-of-hand. We've sold our birthrights. Someone, or God, has to bring it back. People get so caught up in the money.

Always...
Put your faith in God in all things.

Never...
Stop pursuing what you know to be true. Have humility and patience. Never give up hope.

What makes you most proud?
My families here and on St. Thomas. I could never have done it without them.

Being an educator, how do you feel about the VI's current educational system?
The system treats St. Johnians like second-class citizens. Thumbs up for the efforts of the Pine Peace and Guy Benjamin Schools. They are trying very hard for the children.

What is your vision for the future of St. John?

Sooner or later, native St. Johnians will find themselves sitting on Buck Island waiting for us all to go out to sea. There's nothing left for them, nowhere to go.

What's the last thing that made you laugh?
Yesterday, Peter Muilenburg stopped by my house to drop off his interpretation of the eulogy for my funeral. I'm not dead yet, Peter!
