Social Networking, Love City-Style

By Debbie Hime
I’ve encouraged you to get involved in social networking, and we were thinking that a great place to test your social skills online is the new St. John Sun Times website that has loads of places to capture, for example, St. John Carnival through the eyes and experiences of locals.
I’m listing here some easy ways to either test or begin your social networking skills. To make it even easier for you, this whole article is on the Sun Times site in the forum section, with “hot” links, so you don’t have to type in each of the addresses below. So go to www.stjohnsuntimes.com now, create a new account with your personal username and password (it takes seconds), read the rest of the article online, and you’ll be social networking!
The homepage of the site has some really cool videos already loaded, and a couple are on how to tie certain boat knots; so all of you “experts”--check to ensure that they are actually done right, and those who want to learn how, here are some of the most useful knots!
My username for this site is “lvnlife” because you don’t have to tell anyone who you are online – that’s the fun of social networking! Once you are signed in, you can post photos or videos or add to the calendar or forum. Note: remember your “netiquette” on this site and on any other forum or social network in which you participate. Don’t think big brother isn’t watching! Evil posts, foul language and rudeness will get your posts deleted immediately.
Once you are logged in, you will be on the page that lets you add/edit/create your own info, pictures, comments and other things. Some of my favorites:
The “Bulletin Board” is a great place to post stuff going on, benefits, yard sales, birthday parties, and other noteworthy info. Want to let other know how you feel about what to do regarding St. John’s rising grocery costs? Post it here. I’ve posted my new “food find” on the island--which I think is possibly the best food I’ve eaten on St. John EVER--and you will not believe where it’s located!
You can post photos and videos as well--I have posted my favorite 2007 St. John Carnival picture with the cutest guy in green sunglasses you’ve ever seen! I just fell totally in love that day, and followed him around town until I got up the courage to ask if we could take a picture together. Check him out!
Maybe the paper will add a place just for our cute animal pictures, whether it is donkeys or frogs or even your own special friend? Please? [We have that for videos, we’d have to jigger a few things to make that happen in photos, but we’ll see.... –ed.]
Also, if you have stuff for sale or need a place to live, check out the classified section and add it in there. It’s all free! I have nothing to sell right now, so I default to you to add something.
And, under events, I’ve added one very special birthday of someone on the events calendar—someone who does so much for St. John. It’s coming up in the next few months, and I hope you will give a big birthday cheer as it draws nearer.
So, get socializing and post those pictures and videos only St. Johnians can appreciate! I look forward to seeing your STUFF on the site soon!
Here’s to keeping connected,
D
